The mission of this ministry is to raise awareness of environmental issues, promote sustainable practices, and mobilize church members to protect the natural world by integrating faith-based values and teachings.
The group's various initiatives help us Make a Difference in our local community.
The Environmental Ministry meets at 7pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the Sanctuary.
Q: How come we don’t recycle glass anymore?
A: In most markets recycling material is picked up in the “co-mingled” form which means all items together and then sorted at a processing facility. This makes glass very challenging because of breakage and not being able to sort the glass into clear, green and amber colors. The return on glass is very low and challenging to cover processing costs.
Q: How much do you actually recycle and how much is discarded?
A: As a pretty good standard for efficient processing facilities, most have what is called residual that runs between 15 to 25%. So, quick math is 75 to 85% of what everyone puts in their bin gets recycled.
Q: How clean does it have to be?
A: The cleaner, the better.
Q: Can you recycle envelopes with plastic or Kleenex boxes with plastic?
A: You shouldn’t but you could.
Q: How come straws are not recyclable?
A: Straws, plastic bags, and other smaller items are not good for the processing equipment.
Q: Can we recycle bottle caps and do we take them off or leave them on the bottle?
A: Yes, leave them on.
Q: What happens if you leave the label on? Does it get thrown away?
A: It will be processed off and then yes, discarded.
